The Subaru Impreza Outback Sport wagon seemed power-tough at 142 horsepower, but with 165 horses – this is more like it. The entire Impreza line has been revitalized for 2002, but this review spotlights the Outback Sport wagon. Although far from a whistle stop interior, the wagon’s simple, practical approach works. For those who want to stuff the cargo area, a wide-mouth opening is very welcoming as is a pull-shade to conceal the bounty. If extra loading space is needed, the wagon’s 60/40 split-fold rear seatback provides a gateway to cramming in more supplies. (There’s also a sub-floor storage deck.) For travel times with passengers, the wagon provides three headrests in the rear-seat.

A bevy of standard equipment items (including rear bumper step pad, 16-inch alloy wheels, 12-volt power outlet in lighted cargo zone, fog lights, roof rails with cross bars, 80-watt AM/FM stereo with single-disc CD player, air conditioning, and cruise control) pepper the vehicle. As has been the case since 1997, the wagon sports fulltime all wheel drive. Outback Sport earns fuel per gallon estimates of 20 city/28 highway. Vehicle safety is enhanced by a new ring-shaped reinforcement frame body structure. Suggested price of the wagon is $18,695.
