Yep, the new Dodge Ram 1500 is offered with a HEMI engine, a 5.7-liter V8 that spins out 345 horsepower at 5400 rpm and 375 of peak torque at 4200 rpm. What’s different in the power equation is a Multi-Displacement System (MDS) that deactivates from 8 cylinders to 4 cylinders to conserve fuel. The cylinder deactivation (a first for a pick-up truck) happens seamlessly so there is no noticeable transition observed by driver or passengers, and there is no loss of desired power. Even though the MDS can represent up to 20 percent fuel economy gains, the 4x4 Ram 1500 fitted with the 5.7-liter HEMI V8 only matches the Ford F-150’s 4WD per gallon fuel estimates of 14 city/18 highway. The new Ram also features a new frame, suspension, body mounts, larger headlamps, and interior.

The four-door 4x4 Ram employs a new coil-over-shock absorber and double wishbone front suspension. Rear suspension is a Hotchkiss design with leaf springs. Four wheel drive models also include a standard electronic transfer case and a front axle disconnect system in which the front axle disconnects when operating in 2WD. Dodge Ram’s largest tires/wheels available are 20-inch. That makes entering/exiting the vehicle a bit of a stretch for persons shorter than 5-foot-6. Although a high-stance vehicle presents the driver with better exterior views, the hood’s shape partially impairs full visibility for those same short stature people. MSRP of the V8 powered Ram with five-speed automatic transmission is $30,760.
