The disappearance of the ‘wagon’ from vehicle manufacturer offerings coincided with the raging popularity of SUVs. But there still are automakers offering wagons that look fine and perform even better. Subaru is such a provider. The Outback wagon is a dynamic vehicle. It offers potency (try on the 212 horsepower 6-cylinder version), precision (check out the responsive steering) and prestige (plenty of attractive features). For the 2003 model year, the 3.0-liter 6 cylinder-powered Outback models provide On-Star in-vehicle wireless communication service with a one-year security/safety subscription. Other new for 2003 values include altered front-end styling and improved ride and handling via front suspension changes (new internal rebound springs).

All wheel drive Subaru Outback with 6-cylinder and four-speed automatic transmission includes such standard fare as three-point seatbelts for all occupants, 8-way power driver’s seat, armrest for rear seat, 16-inch alloy wheels, cruise control, air conditioning, and dual power moonroof. (The moonroof for front passengers only has a tilt function, but the moonroof for second row passengers has the open/close feature.) Among the ‘thoughtful’ appointments: a pull shade to cover cargo (it’s removable), separate map lights for front and back seat occupants, and a durable, snug-fitting cargo tray. Per gallon mileage estimates are 19 city/26 highway. MSRP for the Outback wagon with 6-cylinder engine is $32,395.
